It’s been raining lately! And while it keeps us indoors, I can’t complain about the showers. We need the rain!
In fact, the showers remind me to sing a favorite hymn, Showers of Blessing!
There shall be showers of blessing: This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Savior above.Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Stanza 1, D. W. Whittle, 1883
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.
I love that this old hymn comes from Ezekiel 34, one of the beautiful prophetic passages about our true Shepherd. God, Himself, searches for His sheep, rescues them, and plants them in good pasture land. He makes a covenant of peace with His people. And He provides for them a righteous ruler!
I will make them and the region around my hill a blessing;
Ezekiel 34:26
and I will send down the showers in their season;
they shall be showers of blessing.
As a child growing up I remember times of “revival.” These were one or two week long services at church. Our family was there nightly – we worshiped, prayed, pleaded with God for revival, a refreshing in our own souls and for the salvation of those dear to us.
There shall be showers of blessing, Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys, Sound of abundance of rain.Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Stanza 2, D. W. Whittle, 1883
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.
God sends the showers of blessing – they are His gift of grace to us. Showers of blessing are His favor raining down on us and as a result our souls are satisfied. Being blessed is all about the prosperity of our souls, experiencing God’s presence fully in our lives!
God sends those showers in their season. Again I am reminded that He designed His good creation with seasons, illustrating for us a cycle of life, dormancy, springtime rains, summer and fall fruitfulness. Seasons illustrate our need to be dependent on God. He is sovereign. We may experience seasons of testing, waiting, even dry spells – imagine what life would be like if it rained every day! Our souls are like a garden of intimacy with God. His word is planted deep in our hearts, strong roots of love grow. He blesses us in seasons of growth, bears with us in the dark seasons, and produces fruit in seasons of service.
God sends showers – not droplets! God’s grace is extravagant. His blessings are many. He blesses us abundantly so that in all things at all times, having all that we need, we abound in every good work He prepares for us to do! His blessings enable us to will and to do of His good purposes!
Drench me with your joy!
May it overflow in praise
to the greatness of our God!
