Romans 12:1: The Mercies of God

Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God …

Paul begins Chapter 12 with this significant phrase … “Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God.” To what mercies is Paul referring?

Paul wants us to remember everything he wrote in the first eleven chapters. Look back through to discover God’s abundant mercies. Here are 33 of them … there may well be more!

Examples of God’s mercy:

1. We experience redeeming justice through the faithfulness of Jesus (3:22)
2. We are justified freely by grace! (3:24)
3. Jesus’ blood is a demonstration of God’s restorative justice (3:25)
4. God makes it possible for us to live in His rightness (3:25)
5. We are blessed because God credits us with righteousness without our works (4:6)
6. Our disobedience is forgiven, and our sins forgiven (4:7)
7. We are blessed because God does not count our sins against us (4:8)
8. God gives spiritual life to the spiritually dead (4:17)
9. Jesus was raised to life to make us right with God (4:25)
10. We have peace with God through Jesus (5:1)
11. God poured his love into our hearts (5:5)
12. He has given us the Holy Spirit (5:5)
13. Jesus died for us even when we were still sinners (5:8)
14. He saved us from his wrath (5:9)
15. He reconciled us to himself, made us His friends (5:11)
16. He gives us eternal life (5:21)
17. We receive an abundance of grace (5:17)
18. We have died to sin (6:2)
19. We have a new life, new quality of life in Christ (6:4)
20. We can produce a harvest of good deeds for God (7:4)
21. He frees us from condemnation (8:1)
22. He makes us his children, co-heirs with Christ (8:17)
23. We are heirs of God’s glory (8:17)
24. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us (8:26-27)
25. God causes all things to work together for our good (8:28)
26. He conforms us to his likeness (8:29)
27. He is for us (8:31)
28. God doesn’t bring charges against us (8:33)
29. We cannot be separated from the love of God (8:35-39)
30. God saves all who call on him (10:13)
31. He allows those who do not seek him to find him (10:20)
32. He offers us his kindness (11:22)
33. God’s gracious gifts and calling are irrevocable (11:29)

Hymn of Praise

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,
like the wideness of the sea.
There’s a kindness in God’s justice,
which is more than liberty.

There is welcome for the sinner,
and more graces for the good.
There is mercy with the Savior,
there is healing in his blood.

But we make God’s love too narrow
by false limits of our own,
and we magnify its strictness
with a zeal God will not own.

For the love of God is broader
than the measures of the mind,
and the heart of the Eternal
is most wonderfully kind.

If our love were but more simple,
we should rest upon God’s word,
and our lives would be illumined
by the presence of our Lord.
