The prophet, Isaiah, writes of a messianic promise … God’s calling in righteousness the one who would become the new covenant and set the captives free.
This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
who gives breath to its people,
and life to those who walk on it:
“I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
(Isaiah 42:5-7)
Who is it that God makes to be a covenant for his people?
Who is light, opening eyes, freeing captives?
Yes, the babe of Bethlehem!
Christ is the mediator of a new covenant,
that those who are called may receive
the promised eternal inheritance
(Hebrews 9:15)
The babe of Bethlehem comes to establish the new covenant, to make His home in our hearts through faith; He is our hope of glory! It is because Christ came to earth, our kinsman-redeemer, that we can enter the throne room of God with confidence!
Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings;
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
(Hebrews 10:22-23)
Christ has come to be my light … your light!
May He open our eyes to the light of His glory this Advent season!
