In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
John 1:1 – 4, 14
and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made.
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son,
who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns.
Revelation 19:12 – 13
He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.
He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.
Jesus’ name – the Word of God! Why? Because he was the clear, complete message of God! Jesus was the embodiment of God’s truth.
Jesus was the witness or testimony to the truth. “Jesus replied, “You say that I am a king. For this reason, I was born, and for this reason, I came into the world—to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (John 18:37)
Jesus was not only the testimony to the truth, He was the truth. “Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
Jesus was the Word in whom we abide if we are His disciples. “So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples.” (John 8:31)
Jesus is the Word of God in His return to earth. He doesn’t wield the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, but He himself is the Word. “From His mouth comes a sharp sword (His word) with which He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron – ” (Revelation 19:15a)
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
Hebrews 1:1-3
This Son, revealing the mystery of God, is the exact representation of God. It is He that is speaking, sustaining all things by His powerful word. The astonishing thing … He is speaking to us … calling us, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20)
O Word of God incarnate,
O Wisdom from on high,
O Truth unchanged, unchanging,
O Light of our dark sky,
we praise thee for the radiance
that from the hallowed page,
a lantern to our footsteps,
shines on from age to age.The church from her dear Master
received the gift divine,
and still that light she lifteth
o’er all the earth to shine.
It is the golden casket,
where gems of truth are stored;
it is the heaven drawn picture
Of Christ, the living Word.It floateth like a banner
before God’s host unfurled;
it shineth like a beacon
above the darkling world.
It is the chart and compass
that o’er life’s surging sea,
‘mid mists and rocks and quicksands,
still guides, O Christ, to thee.O make thy church, dear Savior,
William W. How, 1867
a lamp of purest gold,
to bear before the nations
thy true light, as of old.
O teach thy wandering pilgrims
by this their path to trace,
’til, clouds and darkness ended,
they see thee face to face.
As you pray today, tell God how grateful you are for the Word of God, expressed in His Son, Jesus. Praise God for revealing the truth of who He is through His Son!
