On Saturday, while visiting with friends, I was reminded of a story that our pastor has shared from the pulpit. The story seemed to fit well in this rhyme –
Could God Exist
From a story shared at the Myers’ picnic, May 2009
There is an old story I’ve heard told –
Of a scientist, a neighborly man most bold.
Who in his own words, in God didn’t believe –
For reasons his wife couldn’t conceive.
So off to the minister they did go –
For interrogation you must know.
Only one question the minister did ask …
For the scientist – not a difficult task.
How much of the world’s knowledge do you know?
For all of your study, what do you have to show?
Do you have all knowledge, or do you have just a bit?
At least half all knowledge, the scientist did admit!
The minister shook his head just so –
And on his face a smile did grow.
It’s obvious you’re not a slouch or a pouter,
But dear sir, are you an honest or dishonest doubter?
If one-half all knowledge you do possess –
Could God exist in the half you don’t profess?
To this possibility are you willing to concede –
And if so, would you allow me to proceed?
The scientist sighed but with a nod agreed –
The minister he would not impede.
And so with one last question the minister did try
To challenge the scientist, his faith to espy.
If God revealed himself in the knowledge you don’t know –
Would you acknowledge his gift divine and to him show
The honor, glory, worship he so desires from you –
Simple adoration and obedience, his due?
I’m told the story a happy ending does bear
My reader is surely already aware
The scientist found Jesus clearly revealed
In scripture and by Him was wondrously healed.
