He invites us to come …
come and drink,
come and eat,
come, be full,
in his kingdom,
in his righteousness
knowing, understanding …
whole, complete … joyful!
Reading Isaiah 55 noting Jesus fulfilling prophecy
Living water
Isaiah:
“Is anyone thirsty?
Come and drink—
even if you have no money!
Isaiah 55:1 NLT
Jesus:
“Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.‘”
John 7:38 NLT
Bread of life
Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. Isaiah 55:2 NLT
“The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again.”
John 6:33, 35 NLT
The new covenant
“Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.”
Isaiah 55:3
This cup is the new covenant between God and His people–an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. Luke 22:20 NLT
Jesus is near
Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near. Isaiah 55:6 NLT
From then on, Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
Matthew 4:17 NLT
Jesus gives understanding
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.“
Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT
For, “Who can know the LORD’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:16 NLT
Abundance is ours
You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Isaiah 55:12
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
John 10:10
Jesus says He fulfills prophecy!
Jesus says –“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets.
Matthew 5:17 NLT
No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
Examining how Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 55 is meant to encourage us. When we can’t see the hand of God at work, we can look to the Word to see His accomplishments. Christ has begun a good work in us; we are his workmanship. We can be confident that He will complete his work!
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto me and rest;
lay down, O weary one,
lay down your head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
so weary, worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
the living water, thirsty one;
stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.I heard the voice of Jesus say,
Horatius Bonar (1846)
“I am this dark world’s light.
Look unto me; your morn shall rise
and all your day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I’ll walk
till trav’ling days are done.
