“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,
Revelation 1:8
“who is, and who was,
and who is to come, the Almighty.”
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. … I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David,
Revelation 22:12, 13, 16
and the bright Morning Star.”
God declares Himself the Alpha and Omega in chapter 1 of Revelation. In the last chapter, Jesus applies the same name to Himself! He identifies Himself as God, a person of the Trinity, the same God present in the history of Israel.
“This is what the Lord says—
Isaiah 44:6
Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last;
apart from me there is no God.
Jesus was present at the beginning of all things, present at creation. He will be present at the end. He has always existed; He is eternal!
He was with God in the beginning.
John 1:2-3
Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made.
All of the Law and Prophets pointed to Jesus. And He accomplished all that the Law required. In His life He fulfilled the moral law; in His death, He fulfilled the ceremonial law.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
Matthew 5:17-18
Jesus is our sufficiency. Because He is the Alpha and Omega there is nothing He cannot handle, no need He cannot meet.
Jesus is our victory. He holds all things together, and He has conquered death. There is no challenge over which we cannot be more than conquerors.
Jesus is the Word, and He fulfills the word. He is present in the first verse of Genesis, the world was created by Him, for Him. And he is present in the last verse of Revelation.
Jesus is the Author and Finisher of our faith. He initiates it and He completes it. We can trust Him to complete the work that He has begun in us.
Jesus is our identity. First – He created us, chose us, bought us, redeemed us, adopted us, and will complete His work in us – Last!
Of the Father’s love begotten
ere the worlds began to be,
he is Alpha and Omega,
he the Source, the Ending he,
of the things that are, that have been,
and that future years shall see,
evermore and evermore!O that birth forever blessed,
when the Virgin, full of grace,
by the Holy Ghost conceiving,
bore the Savior of our race;
and the babe, the world’s Redeemer,
first revealed his sacred face,
evermore and evermore!This is he whom heaven-taught singers
sang of old with one accord,
whom the Scriptures of the prophets
promised in their faithful word;
now he shines, the long expected;
let creation praise its Lord,
evermore and evermore!O ye heights of heaven, adore him;
angel hosts, his praises sing:
all dominions, bow before him
and extol our God and King;
let no tongue on earth be silent,
every voice in concert ring,
evermore and evermore!Christ, to thee, with God the Father,
Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius
and, O Holy Ghost, to thee,
hymn and chant and high thanksgiving
and unwearied praises be,
honor, glory, and dominion
and eternal victory,
evermore and evermore!
As you pray today, remember that our history has a trajectory, fully, and completely in the hands of Jesus! Ask God to awaken your confidence in His sovereignty over your life – your Alpha and Omega!
